Area Geography and History
Named for George Wellington Streeter, the neighborhood known today as Streeterville was aggressively defended by Streeter and his associates when police officers attempted to evict him and his wife in the late 1880s. Streeter then attempted to claim a land bar that had been created by dumping as his own property. It wasn’t until 1918 that Streeter’s claim to sovereignty for his neighborhood was overthrown in court. In the years since, Streeterville has developed into a significant cultural district that is home to some of Chicago’s finest architectural sites and amusements.
Streeterville is bounded by the Miracle Mile to the west, by the Chicago River to the south and by Lake Michigan to the east. The eastern half of the portion of Michigan Avenue within the Magnificent Mile is generally considered a part of Streeterville. The neighborhood is served by many major roadways, interstates and the Chicago Transit Authority.
The Residents of Streeterville
According to the most recent census data available, Streeterville is home to about 6,500 residents. One of Chicago’s wealthier neighborhoods, the individuals who live in this area tend to enjoy a median yearly income significantly higher than that throughout the rest of Chicago. The Streeterville area enjoys strong diversity and is known for being a lively and welcoming area for visitors and residents alike.
Entertainment, Arts and Culture
Thanks to its location along the shore of Lake Michigan, Streeterville offers a wide variety of cultural and outdoors recreation opportunities to visitors and residents alike.
