Wicker Park, Chicago Air Conditioning Repair & Service
Although the land on which Wicker Park now sits was sporadically hunted, farmed and fished for hundreds of years before the arrival of European settlers, it wasn’t incorporated into the burgeoning city of Chicago until the 1860s. As successive waves of immigrants moved through the area, it became known for the distinctive Polish Cathedral style of architecture that remains visible in many of its oldest churches. In fact, Wicker Park was a focal point for Polish immigrant culture during the early 20th century. By the 1970s, the area had begun to gentrify. These days, it’s home to an eclectic mix of students, professionals and business owners.
As the anchor neighborhood of Chicago’s “Near Northwest” district, Wicker Park is a busy, densely populated neighborhood that features a wide mix of land uses and economic activities. The neighborhood lies between the busy commercial thoroughfares of Ashland Avenue, Western Avenue, and Division Street. Although its northern border isn’t as well-defined, its meeting point with the adjacent Bucktown neighborhood is usually placed at Armitage Avenue. In addition to its busy “border streets,” Wicker Park contains the radial artery of Milwaukee Avenue. Despite its name, its largest green space is the rather small Clemente Park.
Population and Demographics
As of the most recent Census count, more than 25,000 people live within the traditionally defined neighborhood of Wicker Park. This produces a population density of nearly 30,000 people per square mile. Despite these seemingly close quarters, Wicker Park’s tall brownstones provide comfortable housing for a range of middle class and upper-middle class singles, families and empty-nesters. Most locals work in the neighborhood or commute to the nearby Loop, but a dedicated few take the El or Metra out to the office parks near O’Hare on a regular basis.
Things to Do in Wicker Park, Chicago
As a noted center for the arts, Wicker Park attracts eclectic types from all over the city and beyond. The Flatiron Arts Group is the focus of much of this activity, and the galleries that line Western Avenue and Division Street are always bustling. Wicker Park is also the site of the “Around the Coyote” arts festival. Literary buffs visit the neighborhood to see where famed author Nelson Algren lived as well. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types hit the jogging and biking paths along the nearly pristine North Branch of the Chicago River during the warm months. Lake Michigan’s beaches are just a short walk or drive to the east.
Climate and Weather
Like the rest of Chicago, Wicker Park has a continental climate that’s famously variable. Summertime brings warm, humid weather and plenty of life-giving rainfall. Although heat waves can occasionally push temperatures to the 100-degree mark, they rarely last for more than 72 hours at a time. By contrast, the transitional seasons are consistently mild and pleasant. Spring does bring its fair share of showers and thunderstorms, but the colorful blooms that these rainfall events produce make it all worthwhile. Winter is cold, but truly bitter conditions are rare. Light snowfall events are a regular occurrence.
