What do AFUE and HSPF Mean?

Energy efficiency ratings are a very important consideration when purchasing a new furnace, heat pump or boiler. However, most Logan Square Chicago homeowners don’t know how to interpret the ratings to ensure that they select the most energy efficient heating system possible. At Hollub, Inc., a professional HVAC company that has served the Chicago area since 1928, we enjoy helping to educate our customers about energy efficiency ratings. We want to see you choose the most energy efficient heating system for your Logan Square Chicago home.

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE)

Gas furnaces are assigned an AFUE based on how efficient the unit is at utilizing its available fuel. For example, a gas heating system with a 95 percent AFUE vents only five percent of the fuel available to it outdoors and uses the rest to heat your home. The Carrier Infinity 98 with Greenspeed Intelligence is our premier product and is one of the most energy efficient furnaces on the market.

If you currently own a heating system that was installed more than 13 years ago, it could be less than 60 percent efficient. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not start mandating a minimum AFUE of 78 percent for new heating units until October 2000. Even though your system may still work, you are probably paying a lot more in heating costs than necessary.

Heat Seasonal Performance Factor

The HSPF is used to determine the efficiency of heat pumps. A heat pump is actually an air conditioning unit that reserves its process in the winter to produce heated air. In technical terms, the HSPF is the estimated heating output for an entire season expressed in British Thermal Units (BTU). The BTU is then divided by the total amount of energy the unit consumes in watt-hours. In 2005, the EPA set a minimum standard of 7.7 for all newly produced units. The most efficient heating systems have a rating of 10.
