If you wake up one morning to a cold house, troubleshooting a gas furnace before you call an expert might save you some money. You may be able to find and fix the problem yourself, but call your HVAC pro if you can’t identify the problem quickly.
Furnace Produces No Heat
Check the thermostat. It should be set to “heat” mode, and the set temperature should be above the temperature inside your house. Replace the batteries (in a battery-operated model) if you aren’t certain they’re still good.
The power switch on or near the furnace should be in the “on” position. Check the fuse or circuit breaker. A circuit that won’t stay closed might indicate a burned-out motor or other electrical problem in your system. Call your HVAC contractor for help.
If your furnace has a standing pilot light, be sure it’s lit. A pilot light might go out because of a strong draft, or you may need a new thermocouple. Don’t try to light the pilot unless you’re confident that you can do so safely. (Most modern furnaces don’t use pilot lights.)
Furnace Cycles Off and On Frequently
Frequent cycling may be due to a dirty air filter, a faulty thermostat, or a problem with your blower motor. Change your filter to see if a clean one eliminates the problem.
Your HVAC technician can check for proper thermostat operation as well as for mechanical problems. Belt tightening and fan and motor lubrication might solve the problem.
Furnace is Noisy
Popping and banging noises could be from ducts expanding and contracting. Squealing or grinding noises could be from loose belts or worn bearings. Call for expert help to eliminate noisy furnace operation.
Furnace Doesn’t Produce Enough Heat
Change your air filter. Be sure vents are not blocked by closed doors, furniture or carpets. If your furnace is still not heating well, you might need to have your HVAC technician out for a complete furnace tune-up.
