Need an HVAC Upgrade? Remember the Federal Tax Credit

If you have been considering replacing an old or inefficient HVAC system, you need to act quickly before President Obama’s 25C Federal Tax Credit once again expires. The tax credit initially expired on December 31, 2011, but it is now good until December 31, 2013. It also retroactively includes all eligible HVAC upgrades made in 2012.

Eligible Equipment for the Tax Credit

President Obama renewed the 25C Federal Tax Credit to reward homeowners in Logan Square Chicago and across the country for making voluntarily energy efficiency upgrades. The credits range from $50 to $300 and are available on the following products:

  • $300 credit for split system air conditioners and heat pumps with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 or better.
  • $300 for a packaged central air conditioning system with a SEER of 14 or more.
  • $300 for a split system electric heat pump with 15 SEER or an 8.5 Heat Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF).
  • $300 for a packaged electric heat pump with a SEER greater than 14 or a HSPF greater than 8.0.
  • $300 credit for electric heat pump water coolers with a 2.0 or higher energy factor
  • $300 credit for water heaters that use natural gas, oil or propane and have a minimum 0.82 energy factor or a thermal efficiency rating of at least 90 percent.
  • $150 credit for furnaces and boilers that use natural gas, propane or oil and have a Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of at least 95 percent.
  • $50 credit for advanced main circulating fan used in conjunction with a furnace that runs on oil, natural gas or propane. The electricity use of the fan can’t comprise of more than two percent of the furnace’s total energy use.
