Summer is fast approaching, and that means homeowners are preparing for the cooling season and the costs that come with it. Fortunately, you don’t have to break the bank to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. Here are a few ways to slash your utility bills while keeping your family cool.
Invest in a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans and air conditioners play complementary roles in cooling your home. A good fan will help your air conditioner run more efficiently by breaking up the hot air that tends to collect near the ceiling, reducing energy usage as well as wear and tear on the system. Moreover, the cool breeze from the fan will allow you to keep the house at a somewhat warmer temperature, saving even more.
Set the Thermostat Higher
Every degree of difference on your thermostat lowers your air conditioner’s energy usage by about 7 percent, so it’s best to set it as high as you can comfortably stand. For most people, that’s somewhere between 76 and 79 degrees.
Home AC Maintenance
A well-maintained air conditioner is an efficient air conditioner, and taking a few steps to keep yours in good working order will lead to plenty of cost savings down the road. At minimum, make sure you are cleaning or changing the air filter every one to three months as needed. If your air conditioner uses disposable filters, get your replacements from a HVAC dealer to ensure that they’re properly sized for the unit. If you have a reusable filter, wash it with water and let it air dry completely before putting it back in.
Your air conditioner needs plenty of airflow to run at maximum efficiency. A clean air filter helps, but you’ll also need to ensure that there’s no blockage outside the condenser unit. Clear away any shrubbery or other obstructions from the outdoor unit to ensure that your air conditioner can easily remove heat from your home. Check for any blockage around the indoor unit and in the ducts, as well.
While home maintenance goes a long way toward improving efficiency, the best way to keep your AC running smoothly is to invest in professional maintenance. During each service visit, our professional HVAC technicians will make the small calibration adjustments needed to save you even more throughout the season. We’ll also clear up any small, emerging issues before they can become big problems, preventing future repairs that could really drain your funds.
